MMAC Feds Feed Families – Fighting Hunger and Giving Hope
Vol.9 Issue 6

Each summer, the U.S. Department of Agriculture organizes an annual Feds Feed Families campaign. All federal agencies get involved, partnering with local food banks and pantries. These efforts help the food banks and pantries stay stocked during a time when they traditionally see a decrease in donations but an increase in need. The campaign runs now through September 29, 2023.

The campaign is a voluntary federal and nationwide food drive helping Americans who face food and nutrition insecurity. The national campaign has collected more than 107 million pounds of food. Approximately one 25-pound box of donated food can provide three to four days’ worth of food for a family of four.

Sadly, Oklahoma is the fifth hungriest state in the nation. Most of the people who are served by the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma include chronically hungry children, seniors living on limited incomes, and hardworking families struggling to make ends meet. The Regional Food Bank distributes (on average) 50 million pounds of food each year through its network of more than 1,300 community-based partners in 53 counties throughout central and western Oklahoma.

The kinds of donations that are desperately needed include:

  • Canned Meats: Tuna, chicken, salmon, and other canned meats are excellent sources of protein and are highly sought-after items for those in need.
  • Meat-Based Soups: Nourishing soups with meat content can provide a warm and satisfying meal to individuals facing difficult times.
  • Canned Fruits: Fruits packed in cans retain their nutritional value and add a refreshing touch to meals.
  • Canned Vegetables: Nutritious and delicious, canned vegetables are versatile ingredients that can be enjoyed in various dishes.
  • Peanut Butter: A protein-rich spread that can greatly contribute to balanced meals for families in need.
  • Rice and Beans: Stable food items that offer essential nutrients and form the base of many hearty meals.
  • Healthier Options: Consider donating low-sodium, whole grain products, and fruit in 100% fruit juice. These items contribute to better overall health and wellness.

There are many ways to get involved, you can volunteer at the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, or you can donate non-perishable cans of food to any of the designated boxes located around the Aeronautical Center.
