Tony Darnell opens the 2023 Human Systems Integration Summit

The Aerospace Human Factors Division co-hosted the 6th Annual Human Systems Integration (HSI) Summit on May 16, 2023. The Federal Aviation Administration’s Tony Darnell (Manager, Terminal Automation Section) and Dr. Carla Hackworth (Manager, Aerospace Human Factors Research) arranged a one-day, come-and-go, virtual Summit.

Kevin O’Connor provides welcome comments for the 2023 Human Systems Integration Summit
John Frederick, FAA Test & Evaluation

The Aeronautical Center’s Deputy Director, Kevin O’Connor, welcomed presenters and attendees to each of the two sessions for this annual summit. Experts across government, academia, and industry discussed Human Readiness and Understanding of the Integration of Emerging Technologies across Transportation modes including methods for the development and use of Digital Twins. The integration of emerging technologies into an already complex transportation ’system of systems’ is challenging, as multiple technologies are evolving simultaneously and pressing unaided human capabilities to the limits.

This year 171 people registered for the event, which emphasized Digital Twins - virtual representations of a connected physical asset (e.g., product, process, object, or system). The speakers explored the use of a virtual twin in transportation, applying it in medicine as a means to address disease.

Dr. Olivia Pinon Fischer, Principal Research Engineer at Georgia Institute of Technology
