Enterprise Services Center Helps National Science Foundation Through Tax Season
Vol.9 Issue 1

Anyone who has worked in accounting, owned their own business, or filed their own tax returns understands the stress of the tax filing season. It’s a mad rush to verify taxpayer information and dollars paid and received, while ensuring that the software is up to date with Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tax codes to properly and timely file returns.

This tax year is no different for the Enterprise Services Center (ESC), for their customers and even potential customers. The ESC was presented the opportunity to support the National Science Foundation (NSF) in the preparation and filing of their 2022 Tax Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC during January 2023. In mid-January 2023, the NSF contacted Jennifer Funk, Deputy Chief Financial Officer for the Department of Transportation, regarding an issue with the vendor that they had previously used in performing the preparation, mailing, and filing of their 2022 Tax Forms. Ms. Funk reached out to the ESC Leadership Team to determine if ESC would be able to assist the NSF. The Enterprise Services Center immediately met with DOT and NSF personnel to gather requirements and provide a quote for services.

An inter-agency agreement, executed through the Treasury’s G-Invoicing platform, was expedited within the ESC Business Office, and ultimately signed so work could begin. The ESC Accounts Payable (AP) staff quickly responded by contacting the National Science Foundation staff, requesting specific data for preparing the tax forms. Within 72 hours of the first meeting with AP, the tax form preparation for approximately 6,000 tax forms was completed. The ESC Media Solutions Group prepared additional forms by printing, completing and printing in record time.

Once the forms were cut and stuffed into envelopes by the Aeronautical Center’s Facility Support Staff, the ESC Accounts Payable Team performed a final quality control check on all the tax forms to ensure that the printing was correct and no tax forms were double-stuffed into envelopes. In addition to completing and issuing existing customer’s forms, approximately 7,000 tax forms, all NSF tax forms were successfully issued in time to meet the IRS filing deadline of January 31, 2023.
