Common Office Safety Issues
Vol.8 Issue 3

The Facilities Services Division (AMP-100) within the Office of Facility Management conducts annual safety walk through inspections around the grounds of the Aeronautical Center. Some of the most common safety issues that are identified are blocked electrical panels (Fig 1.), "daisy chaining" of cords (Fig 2.), over-loading circuits (Fig 3.), and improper use of space heaters. (Fig 4.).

Fig 1 – Electrical panels, switches and gear needs a minimum of 36 inches of clearance to allow access. Fig 2 – Plugging in one surge protector or extension cord into another can cause wires to overheat and create a fire hazard. Fig 3 – Outlets are only rated to handle so much. When they become overloaded they create a fire hazard. Fig 4 – Space heaters must be used properly and turned off and unplugged when not attended. They must also have an automatic shut-off if tipped over.

According to a NFPA report titled, "Home Electrical Fires" by Richard Campbell, March 2019: "Electrical failures or malfunctions were the second leading cause of U.S. home fires in 2012-2016 (behind fires caused by unattended equipment), accounting for 13% of home structure fires."
