The number of businesses showing interest in Human Machine Interface technologies is rising steadily. The Human Systems Integration (HSI) summit is a venue for forward-looking and forward-thinking information sharing that provides glimpses into the present and future state of technology and science as it pertains to human system interfaces.
The 5th annual HSI summit, hosted by the Aeronautical Center was held on Tuesday, June 7, 2022. The single-day virtual event was presented in two sessions with interesting and relevant videos playing over the 30-minute lunch break.
The FAA’s Tony Darnell (Manager, Terminal Automation Section) and Dr. Carla Hackworth (Manager, Aerospace Human Factors Research) arranged a one-day, come-and-go, virtual summit to showcase technology advancements. The Aeronautical Center’s Deputy Director, Kevin O’Connor, welcomed presenters and attendees to the annual summit. The result was an engaging, fast-paced, and informative knowledge-sharing environment that boasted over 393 views, and 142 registered participants.
Many of today’s technological advancements focus on the synergy between human, machine, and automation. An array of tremendous speakers presented throughout the day, discussing what Human Machine Interfaces mean to each of us and our futures. The nine distinguished guest speakers hailed from government, academia, and industry. The FAA’s Dr. Melchor Antuñano (Civil Aerospace Medical Institute) led off with his presentation with representatives from academia and industry following. Speakers representing academia included Dr. Karen Feigh (Georgia Tech Cognitive Engineering Center); Dr. Dahai Liu (Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University); Dr. Erin Chiou (Polytechnic School of Arizona State University); and Dr. Serena Auñón-Chancellor (Louisiana State University, University of Texas Medical Branch, and NASA). Industry speakers included Jay Shively (NASA Ames); Dr. Gideon Bass (Booz Allen Hamilton); Gary Watson (Fortem Technologies); and Fabian ‘Fabi’ Riesen (VRM-Switzerland).
With rapid advancements in technology, it was good to get a frame of reference for the human impacts as advancements become more commonplace. This year’s summit theme involved some of the hottest topics in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and the application of medicine. Attendees heard presenters discuss topics such as the unexpected discoveries and effects on the human body caused from extended times spent in zero gravity; advancements in computer vision driving AI in all disciplines including Machine Learning; the impact of autonomous drones on the War in Ukraine; and the world’s first qualified virtual reality flight training device - a Swiss-made helicopter simulator.
The impressive list of guest speakers and topics demonstrates that the annual HSI Summit is one of the premiere learning opportunities of the year. The feedback that we have received this year was exceedingly positive, and was a nice reward for the work put in by the HSI Summit team, who makes this summit possible each year. Be on the lookout for the 6th annual summit coming to you in 2023!
