Save the Date! The Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center (MMAC) is excited to announce the next installment of the quarterly MMAC Tech Talk Series: "Trustable, Robust, Human-in-the-Loop Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Decision-Making Operationalized for Aviation and Safety." The Tech Talk will be held on May 25, 2021, from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM. Stay tuned for broadcast messaging with registration information!
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are being rapidly deployed to automate recommendations and make decisions. While there are many examples of successful automated AI/ML that have been deployed, there are also many examples of suboptimal and biased decisions based on these systems. To be most effective, fulfilling their potential for many complex applications, AI/ML systems need to be unbiased, transparent, robust, trustable, and integrated into human-computer teaming environments. In this Tech Talk, Dr. David Ebert will address the potential of creating human-in-the-loop decision making environments, powered by advanced interactive analytics and human-guided machine learning. Additionally, he will present examples of solutions that have been used in security, safety, and aviation environments with interactive visual analytic interfaces. The systems have been deployed in entities such as the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), US Coast Guard (USCG), as well as other logistic supply chains and emergency response and safety organizations.
Dr. David Ebert is an Associate Vice President for Research and Partnerships, the Gallogly Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Director of the Data Institute for Societal Challenges at the University of Oklahoma. He is an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Fellow; an adjunct Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University; Director of the Visual Analytics for Command Control and Interoperability Center (VACCINE) and the Visualization Science team of the Department of Homeland Security’s Visual Analytics and Data Analytics Emeritus Center of Excellence.
Dr. Ebert received his Ph.D. in Computer and Information Science from The Ohio State University and performs research in visual analytics, novel visualization techniques, interactive machine learning and explainable AI, human-computer teaming, advanced predictive analytics, and procedural abstraction of complex, massive data. He is the recipient of the 2017 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computer Society Visualization and Graphics Technical Community (vgTC) Technical Achievement Award for seminal contributions in helping define the field of visual analytics, and he was elected to the IEEE vgTC Visualization Academy in 2019.
The Aeronautical Center is pleased to present quarterly technical briefings called "MMAC Tech Talks." These Tech Talks showcase a variety of industry experts who share their insights, experiences, and discoveries as they relate to the aviation and business industries. MMAC Tech Talks offer a glimpse of where technology stands today, highlighting current trends in aviation and business, and how these trends impact the way we live. They also explore problem-solving strategies using innovation and collaboration through cost-effective measures. The quarterly MMAC Tech Talks facilitate the sharing of technological solutions for the ever-changing needs of the Aeronautical Center and the world.
