Planning for an Emergency Response in the Workplace

Workplace emergencies can range from natural disasters and fires to medical emergencies and security incidents. Having effective response plans in place is crucial to protecting employees, contractors, students, and visitors at the MMAC. Being prepared and knowing what to do when emergencies arise can save lives and minimize damage. Here are some key elements dealing with workplace emergencies:

Concept of emergency plan

Fire Protection

  • Activate the Fire Alarm and alert other personnel in the area.
  • Proceed to the nearest exit and evacuate the building immediately.
  • Use the stairs…Do Not Use Elevators!
  • Assist those who need help.
  • Proceed to the designated assembly area shown on the Primary Fire and Bomb Threat Evacuation Area Maps.
  • Personnel are to remain in the assigned assembly areas until advised by MMAC Security, OKC Fire Department, or OKC Police Department to return to their work locations, move to another assembly location, or leave the Center.

Bomb Threat

  • If you receive a threat, try to gather the information listed on the FAA Threat Checklist. The Threat Checklist should be located under your office phone.
  • Exit the building and proceed to the designated primary assembly area when instructed to do so. Personnel will be notified to evacuate over the building's public address (PA) system.
  • Do Not Use Areas of Safe Refuge…All personnel should exit the building.
  • Close but do not lock doors when exiting to allow access to first responders.
  • Elevators should only be used by personnel who cannot use the stairs.
  • Follow instructions from MMAC Security, OKC Fire Department, or OKC Police Department.

Severe Weather

  • The Center siren will be activated, and an announcement will be made over the public address system.
  • Proceed to the nearest designated shelter as shown on the Severe Weather Shelter Area Maps.
  • Assist those who need help.
  • If you are unable to travel to a shelter, seek cover in an interior room on the ground floor of the building or in designated safe rooms.
  • At the shelter, move as close to the walls as possible and keep stairwells and elevator entrances clear to allow others to enter.
  • Remain in the shelter until the all-clear is given.

Medical Emergencies

  • Check individual to determine their condition.
  • Call the Emergency Number, (405) 954-3444.
  • Render first aid or CPR as necessary.
  • Avoid contact with blood or bodily fluids if possible.
  • Direct first responders to the location.
