7th Annual Human Systems Integration Summit
Vol.10 Issue 5
7th Annual Human Systems Integration Summit June 4th, 2024. The emerging state of technologies that aid human learning, training, performance and efficacy. Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Extended Reality technologies, and Artificial Intelligence applications that aid human learning.

The Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center’s NextGen Integration Committee hosted the 7th Annual Human Systems Integration (HSI) Summit on June 4, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (CST).

This year’s theme explored "The Emerging State of Technologies that Aid Human Learning, Training, Performance, and Efficacy," with topics such as advances in intelligent tutoring and computer adaptive testing, the use of augmented reality applications for training, and limitations of augmented reality as a learning tool.

The use of technology and machines in training humans is not new. Flight simulators have been used to train pilots for nearly a century. However, emerging technologies like Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Extended Reality (XR) provide a more immersive training environment.

The Federal Aviation Administration’s Tony Darnell (Manager, Terminal Automation Section) and Dr. Carla Hackworth (Manager, Aerospace Human Factors Research in the Civil Aerospace Medical Institute) hosted the one-day, come-and-go, virtual event.

Speakers include Doug Siefken and Nick Scarnato, TransLumen Technologies; Eric Corey, National Institute of Aviation Research (NIAR) – Wichita State University; Cliff Johnson, FAA; Bob Thomas, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Daytona Beach; Braden Tanner, FAA; and Stephanie Fussell, Kent State University. Anyone from academia, industry and government was invited to attend and experience how new technologies are changing the way we learn.
