Can you tell us about your career path?
I began my career with the U.S. Air Force as an aircraft maintenance technician and retired in 1997. My FAA career started in Louisville, Kentucky, working with the Delta Airlines Certificate Office as a Regional Inspector. After several years, I accepted a detail in Washington, D.C., to the newly established Systems Approach to Safety Oversight (SASO) program office. This office was responsible for the development of the next generation of safety oversight for certificate holders. Prior to working in the SASO program office, I accepted a position of becoming a Supervisory Principal Maintenance Inspector for UPS Airlines. Next, I moved on to the newly established Safety Management System (SMS) program office where I served as the field lead working with the major airlines in a pilot project to develop SMS development and implementation process and procedures. In 2010, I transferred to the FAA Academy and have held several management positions in the Regulatory Standards Division (AMA-200) until recently being selected for the AMA-2 position.
Describe one of your most memorable experiences with the agency:
Working with the employees of AMA-200 in positioning the organization on a new path. I am still amazed at the dedication and professionalism of these employees. I also had the opportunity to testify to Congress with a past FAA Administrator, Jane Garvey.
What are you most excited about with your new job?
I’m most excited about the opportunity to work with the Aeronautical Center Leadership Team and to learn more about other lines of business.
What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your career?
One of the largest challenges faced is maintaining a healthy balance of family and job. Although we all want to do a good job and be well thought of, the thing that will be there after the job is over is our family.
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
As far back as I can remember I wanted to join the Air Force and travel.
What was your very first job?
I was born and raised on a cattle farm. I helped take care of livestock and farming.
What are some traits that you admire most in others?
I most admire people who take the time to make an investment in the people around them.
What is your favorite vacation spot?
My favorite vacation spot is anywhere on the Beach.
What are some hobbies that you enjoy?
I have five granddaughters so they have become my hobby. We are expecting our first grandson in September.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
The best advice came from my grandfather when I was 10 years old – “If you want respect you must earn it, so...Always do what you say you'll do and pay your bills on time.”
What is something that people would be surprised to know about you?
My high school graduation class was only 19 people in Chandlers, Kentucky. I’m proud to have been an alumni of the “Thunderbirds” at an early age.
Welcome Keith, we’re glad to have you at the FAA Academy & Aeronautical Center!
