OKC Youth Enjoy a Day of Aviation
August 2015
ACE Counselors Kathy Barnes (AMP-100) and Dennis Fellin (AML-7030) help some of the students in preparation for a Bernoulli’s Principle exercise.

As the summer begins to wind down, 23 students from the Oklahoma City area got a chance to enjoy the FAA’s and Metro Technology Center’s “Day of Aviation”. Due to the overwhelming response of applications for the 10th Anniversary of Aviation Career Education (ACE) Camp in June, it was decided that it would be great idea to offer a day camp for those who had stellar applications but could not attend the original week long camps due to space and safety considerations.

The Day of Aviation bustled with activity from learning about the forces of flight and parts of airplane, to understanding the importance of listening to a pre-flight safety briefing and then learning some of the daily responsibilities of an air traffic controller. The students enjoyed visiting the Civil Aerospace Medical Institute and the FAA Academy. With any luck, many of these Day campers may turn into Week campers next year!

A Metro Tech instructor, Ed Bannan informs some of the students about the parts of an aircraft and aviation terminology like “spinner”.
The students loved getting a demonstration from CAMI’s Flight Deck Human Factors Research Laboratory especially since it gave the sensation of flying while just standing.
An aviation student enjoyed the fact that dummies can be “smart” thanks to new technologies in anthropomorphic testing devices.
During the students’ visit to CAMI, they were timed on their ability to quickly and properly don a floatation device.
Some realized that the instructions were printed on the vest!
Success….inflation!
Learning about the importance of Air Traffic coordination and phraseology, the students listen to Patti Pickhard, (AMA-513A) a Unit Manager in the ATCS Initial Tower Cab Training at the FAA Academy.
