As we begin a pivotal point with social change, each of us play a vital part in the reform of racial injustice. Whether it’s through having heartfelt, open, honest social discourse or through continuous training to enlighten our minds, it is the responsibility of everyone to proceed in the spirit of reform, doing something to uplift one another while moving away from biased norms. Changing the culture requires sustained, intentional action. If you should witness an insidious act, rather than feeling helpless, realize that you have the power and the responsibility to take action.

Be the Change You Want to See

The FAA’s electronic learning management system (LMS) offers numerous training opportunities for employees and managers on various diversity topics. Training videos and audio books are also available. To learn more about what unconscious biases you might have, researchers from the University of Washington, Harvard University, and the University of Virginia have developed Project Implicit, where participants can voluntarily take implicit association tests to learn about their hidden biases. The biases include skin-tone preference, sexuality preference, the link between gender and science, the link between gender and family vs. career, racial preference, weight preference, disability preference, and others. The tests are confidential but can help provide insight into self-perceptions.

Please realize that taking training, reading a book, watching a video or taking a test is not going to change behavior, but it can create an awareness and suggest new ways for creating a more inclusive culture.
