The FAA is requesting help from all employees to help spread the word among local schools and universities about some of the outstanding competitions and awards that currently exist.
The FAA challenges undergraduate and graduate students to develop innovative ways to use smart technology in and around airports to enhance the overall travel experience.

Challenge Background
The FAA is using this competition to:
The FAA intends to incentivize university level students at accredited United States-based colleges and universities to think creatively in developing solutions to transportation technology challenges while addressing the human factors aspects of the traveler’s experience, and to share those innovations with the broader community.
The FAA is sponsoring the competition under authority of the FAA Acquisition Management System (AMS), 49 U.S.C. 106(l) and (m).
Submissions:
The FAA Challenge competition will begin and submissions will be accepted between September 16, 2019 and 11:59 PM ET January 13, 2020.
Expression of Interest:
Teams are encouraged to submit an Expression of Interest to compete in this FAA Challenge by 11:59 PM ET October 16, 2019.
Finalist Announcement:
A panel of FAA judges will conduct an evaluation and select three finalist teams, which will be announced by March of 2020.
Demonstration and Awards:
Finalist teams will be invited to New Jersey to demonstrate their concepts in May of 2020. A $25,000 award will be given to the lead university of the winning team.

The FAA is a founding partner of this virtual engineering competition for high school aged students. To participate is free and teams receive nearly $1 million in software to keep. Winners at the International Competition in April receive a $50K scholarship for each member to attend Embry Riddle University.
Real World Design Challenge
As part of our national partnership with the National Association of State Airport Officials (NASAO) the FAA has helped support the International Aviation Art Contest. The Ken Cook Corporation has agreed to send brochures to all who ask for them free of charge.

International Aviation Art Contest 2020: "Flying Yesterday & Tomorrow"
Since 1989, the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) has hosted the International Aviation Art Contest to challenge young people to illustrate the importance of aviation through art. Demonstrating the impact of aeronautics through an interactive, fun medium such as art motivates youth of all ages to become more familiar with aeronautics, engineering and science. The U.S. portion of the contest is conducted by NASAO and the NASAO Center for Aviation Research and Education. The U.S. contest is sanctioned by the National Aeronautic Association (NAA), and supported by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University – Prescott, Ken Cook Co., the Federal Aviation Administration, and the National Coalition for Aviation and Space Education with additional support from NASAO State Members
Children between the ages of 6 and 17 may participate. Entries will be judged in three classes, according to age and at least in part for its creative use of the theme in relation to the aviation world. Each FAI member country sponsors the contest in their own country, and submits national winners to the International Jury each year.
The National Coalition for Aviation and Space Education provides two national awards each year called the Dr. Mervin K. Strickler Jr. Aerospace Education Leadership Award and the Crown Circle Award.
The Strickler Award recognizes those who share Dr. Strickler’s commitment to aerospace education through the demonstration of outstanding accomplishment to the aerospace field through education over a continuous period of time. The Mervin K. Strickler Aerospace Education Leadership Award was established by NCASE in 1995 to distinguish and honor excellence in aerospace education.
The Crown Circle Award is a special award for outstanding educators and education supporters who have shown leadership in their field or in support of aviation education objectives. Nominees are evaluated according to the following criteria:

Incentivizing students at high schools and universities to think creatively in developing innovative solutions to aviation and aerospace challenges.
The Secretary of Transportation is announcing the sixth annual competition to recognize students with the ability to demonstrate unique and innovative thinking in aerospace science and engineering. This competition includes a high school division and both a graduate and undergraduate university division. The Department of Transportation (DOT) intends to use this competition to incentivize students at high schools and universities to think creatively in developing innovative solutions to aviation and aerospace challenges, and to share their innovations with the broader community.
The Secretary’s RAISE Award competition will recognize innovative scientific and engineering achievements that will have a significant impact on the future of aerospace or aviation. On behalf of the Secretary, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will accept student submissions and will invite subject-matter-experts to conduct an evaluation of all qualifying entries in December.
