FAA Academy Hosts First Small Unmanned Aircraft System Safety Summit

Oklahoma Unmanned Aerial System Safety Summit, Oklahoma City July 16-17, 2019

July 16-17, 2019, the FAA Academy’s Regulatory Standards Training Division (AMA-200) collaborated with the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce to host a small Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Safety Summit for first responders, members of law enforcement, as well as local, state, and federal government agencies that safely operate or plan to safely operate UAS’s within the state of Oklahoma. The event was held at the Moore Norman Technology Center South Penn Campus in Oklahoma City.

First responders learned from the Summit how UAS’s can have a positive impact of public safety operations.

Jay Tevis, Branch Manager of the Commercial Transportation Operations has been representing the FAA Academy and the Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center (MMAC) by participating in team meetings with internal and external stakeholders to help plan the event, build an agenda, identify subject-matter-experts from key participant organizations including: The Choctaw Nation, Federal Aviation Administration’s Office of UAS Integration, Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission, CloudDeck Media, Guthrie Fire Department, FAA Safety Team, Rose State College, Oklahoma State University, Muskogee County Sheriff’s Office, Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Oklahoma Department of Public Safety, Federal Bureau of Investigation, United States Department of Justice, FAA’s Office of Aeronautical Central Regional Counsel, The Department of Homeland Security, and the University of Oklahoma School of Law.

Brendan Groves, Senior Counsel to the Deputy Attorney General, Department of Justice provides a briefing on "Countering the Drone Threat: The View from DOJ".

The two-day Summit encompassed training with peer-to-peer dialogue, discussions among industry experts who are using UAS’s for public safety and emergency management. Keynote speakers presented information to the attendees on how to comply with the regulations, laws, privacy, and security aspects of implementing a safe and effective public safety drone program.

The event supports FAA’s mission to ensure the safest, most efficient aerospace system in the world through safety education and outreach programs to government agencies.
