Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15th to October 15th, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America.
The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries; Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their Independence Days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30-day period.
The Aeronautical Center Chapter of the National Hispanic Coalition of Federal Aviation Employees (NHCFAE) celebrated this year by hosting several events. Working under this year’s theme of “Shaping the Bright Future of America”, festivities were kicked off at an opening ceremony in Washington D.C., at the Department of Transportation headquarters on September 20th. The kickoff event was streamed virtually over the internet for the second year in a row. Welcoming remarks were provided by NHCFAE National President, David Dominguez, followed by the Honorable Elaine L. Chao, Secretary U.S. Department of Transportation as the keynote speaker, and the Honorable Jovita Carranza, U.S. Treasurer, as a guest speaker.
The NHCFAE’s Aeronautical Center chapter held a member luncheon at a local Mexican Restaurant on September 27th to discuss the remaining events scheduled at the Center. A Hispanic Heritage Food Truck event was held on October 3rd in the Center’s pavilion area. Smoke ‘N Oak Pizza, The Flying Pig BBQ, and Aramark all served food to hungry Aeronautical Center employees during lunchtime. It turned out to be perfect day, with many employees enjoying tasty culinary options while listening to Salsa music. Each vendor donated proceeds from their profits to the Hurricane Harvey Relief effort. The chapter was able to raise over $250, which was donated to federal employees who were impacted by the recent hurricanes.
The last event, a delivery of goods, would not have been possible without the support of all the Employee Associations located at the Aeronautical Center. Javier Quinones, an Electronics Technician Instructor and NHCFAE member, identified a foundation that was collecting donated items to send to Puerto Rico in support of the Hurricane Maria relief effort. A broadcast email was sent to all employee associations, and they responded by donating much needed items to fill a 12’ x 5’ trailer.
