New Oklahoma License Plate Tags Arrive in September This September, Oklahomans will be issued newly designed license plate tags as part of the state’s effort to modernize and enhance vehicle registration. The new tags will feature updated designs that reflect Oklahoma’s unique identity, along with enhanced security features aimed at reducing counterfeiting.

The state’s Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Oklahoma Tax Commission (OTC) have collaborated on this initiative, which includes a fresh design inspired by Oklahoma’s natural landscapes and cultural heritage. The new tags will replace the current "Explore Oklahoma" design, which has been in use since 2017.

Key Features of the New Tags:

  • Modern Design: The new tags feature vibrant colors and imagery that showcase Oklahoma’s diverse environments, including elements like rolling plains, red dirt, and iconic state symbols.

  • Enhanced Security: In response to the increasing threat of counterfeiting, the new plates incorporate state-of-the-art security features, including holographic elements and microtext, making them much harder to duplicate.

  • Durability: Made from high-quality materials, the new tags are designed to withstand the state’s varying weather conditions, ensuring longevity and readability over time.

Transition Details:

  • Timeline: The new tags will be available starting September 1, 2024. All newly registered vehicles will automatically receive the new design. Existing vehicle owners will receive the new tags upon renewal of their registration.

  • Cost: The cost of the new license plates remains the same as the previous design. Vehicle owners will not incur additional charges for the transition to the new tags during their regular registration cycle.

  • Distribution: To ensure a smooth transition, the OTC will roll out the tags in phases, prioritizing regions with the highest volume of vehicle registrations.
