When Oklahoma winds blow from 20-40 mph, many people don’t think that’s cause for an outdoor celebration, but the folks at the Scissortail Park and the Innovation District agree, that it’s the ideal time to celebrate the effects of Mother Nature! On Saturday, April 6th from 10 am-2 pm, members of the Aeronautical Center’s STEM Outreach Team put together a weighted-down booth of aeronautical activities to share with the community during the 2024 Scissortail Park Wind Festival.
Approximately 2,500 people from around the community attended this free, open-to-the-public, breezy activity. The first 100 people received a complimentary kite. The day provided so much wind, that many of the exhibitors were not able to set up their tents. Brochures had to be taped to the tables and stored in nearby boxes. Aeronautical Center STEM Outreach Representatives hosted a booth and set up a table-top simulator, which had to be taped to a nearby pole to keep it from blowing away.
The colorful event was comprised of kites of all shapes and sizes, paper airplanes, pinwheels, wind chimes, and much more! There were kite competitions for the highest flying, the biggest kite, the most colorful kite, and the fanciest character kite. There were several food trucks and a seasonal opening of a farmer’s market, and musical performers. This was truly a family event in which everyone was blown away by the free STEM activities which were available!
