We are delighted to announce that, effective June 30, 2024, Robert (Bob) Molden has been selected to serve as the Director of the FAA Academy (AMA-1). He will lead a workforce of approximately 330 federal and 540 contract employees while managing a budget of over $13 million. Part of his leadership responsibility includes setting the strategic direction of the FAA Academy to meet the agency’s mission needs.
In his role, Molden will oversee the effective management, planning, direction, and coordination of all Academy training activities. He will serve as a key advisor to top agency management on matters related to FAA Academy management and operations. Molden plays a crucial role in overseeing a complex and specialized training program designed to meet the FAA workforce’s evolving needs, and keep pace with rapid technological advancements in aviation.
Before his current position, Molden served as the Air Traffic Training Branch Manager, responsible for the comprehensive training of around 2,000 new hire students and experienced air traffic controllers annually, across multiple disciplines. His dedication to educational excellence and innovative training methodologies have been a hallmark of his career.
With extensive experience as a Supervisory Air Traffic Controller, Molden demonstrates exceptional leadership by enhancing efficiency and innovation within the Air Traffic Training Division. He supervised complex air traffic operations at the Daytona Beach Air Traffic Control Tower, leading a large team of operational supervisors and controllers, while also training developmental certified professional controllers (CPC) and working closely with the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA), navigating, and solving numerous operational challenges. Molden also has prior experience and success as the Orlando Executive Air Traffic Control Tower manager, leading managers and controllers, while improving operational preparedness.
Molden’s expertise in project management, resource optimization, and strategic planning contributes to exceeding industry training standards. As the leader of numerous critical projects, his efforts play a crucial role in ensuring the most effective modality for training is provided, whether it is resident instructor-led training at the FAA Academy, virtual training, or blended training approaches.
Molden is pursuing a master’s degree in business administration from Southeastern Oklahoma State University and holds a bachelor’s degree in management from Bellevue University. His commitment to excellence and innovative spirit have significantly impacted the field of aviation training and management.
Molden and his wife have been married for 36 years and have three sons and four granddaughters. They enjoy traveling and spending time with their granddaughters in their free time.
