With severe weather in recent forecasts, everyone has been very aware of what it’s like outside. On May 22nd, the Diversity Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) Block Party ensued despite the weather risk. Though the early morning began with a rainy blast including hail from the north, everything dried up in time for the event–like it was meant to be!
As outside events go, there’s always a possibility of discomfort, but despite a bit of wind, the Block Party was a huge success, with hundreds of employees and contractors in attendance. Pouring in from all sides of the Center during lunchtime, a crowd soon gathered near the headquarters pavilion area to enjoy food trucks and booths from various Employee Associations located at the Aeronautical Center.
Representatives were available to answer questions about their respective Employee Associations, including: Aeronautical Center Employees Association (ACEA); FAA Managers Association (FAAMA); FAA Pride; MMAC Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Accessibility (DEIA) Council; Mutual Aid Pledge System (MAPS); National Asian & Pacific American Association (NAPA); National Black Coalition of Federal Aviation Employees (NBCFAE); National Coalition of Federal Aviation Employees with Disabilities (NCFAED); National Hispanic Coalition of Federal Aviation Employees (NHCFAE); Native American Alaskan Native Coalition of Federal Aviation Employees (NAAN); Professional Women Controllers (PWC); and Technical Women’s Organization (TWO).
The smell of burning firewood from the BBQ smokepit and delectably prepared foods filled the air and made for a festive environment. Music from varied genres entertained visitors who caught up with old friends, face to face. Each of the organizations helped contribute to the musical playlist, choosing songs that best reflected their organization. By the end of the event, the skies were clear, and the sun warmed all who came out to enjoy this special occasion. Thanks to the DEIA Council for hosting the event, where many people learned more about the plethora of Employee Associations on the Aeronautical Center. The event helped bring people of different communities together, celebrating with music, food, and personal connections. Like most block parties, it was the perfect day for mutual solidarity and enjoyment.
