A Look at Headquarters from the Ground Up
November/December 2016

While we are sure you have noticed a lot of construction going on around the Aeronautical Center, here is a summary of some of projects currently underway:

The Headquarters building is undergoing numerous mechanical upgrades to the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system. Upgrades include two new energy-efficient chillers and associated cooling tower and pumps, as well as seven new roof-mounted air handling units, all of which presented numerous challenges to maintain air conditioning services while the Headquarters building remains occupied. The new state-of-the art chillers utilize “frictionless” magnetic-drives, which will improve efficiency by as much as 0.5 kW per ton. Coupled with new variable speed pumps and cooling tower fans, the estimated annually energy cost savings will be approximately $28,000.00. New direct digital controls are being incorporated to improve system operation, maintenance and control of space temperatures via remote monitoring at the Central Control and Monitoring System (CCMS) located at the Base Maintenance building. Additionally, the new roof mounted air handling units are provided with state-of-the-art airflow monitoring to assure a healthy environment is provided to the occupants of the Headquarters building. United Mechanical, under the Oklahoma City Airport Trust (OCAT) is the construction contractor for this project. The work is scheduled for completion in January 2017. The Logistics Support Facility (LSF) portion of the project, which includes a boiler and chiller replacement, is expected to be completed in the summer of 2017.

In addition to the mechanical upgrades, the slab on the first floor of the Headquarters building is being repaired. It is a project that will replace settling slab issues on both the north wing and south wing of Headquarters building. The project was awarded to Cooley Construction for $1,513,900.00. This project involved demolition of the existing sinking slab and all the interior walls, and the installation of helical piers down to bedrock to support the new slab.

These are images of work being conducted on the north wing of the Headquarters building. Here, the existing slab has been removed and the new helical piers are being drilled into place. The small pipes projecting up from the sand pad are the helical piers. Each pier extends approximately 24’ into the ground.

The project was awarded in phases, the first phase was the north wing and the second phase was the south wing. The north wing is now complete and AHF-C410, OKC Shared Service Center has permanently moved into the northwest side of the corridor. AHF-C420, a portion of Aviation Careers, has temporarily moved to the northeast side of the corridor.

Work has begun on the south wing of the Headquarters building to replace the building’s slab.
Employees originally in this area have temporarily relocated. Once the South portion of the slab is replaced, the Human Resources Aviation Careers Division (AHF-C420) will return to their previous location. Barriers have been erected in these areas to keep employees safe from the construction activities.

Special thanks to the occupants of the Headquarters building and other MMAC renovation locations for their patience and understanding during these construction projects.
