Next year, an Austin, Texas based skydiving company called iFLY has plans to build a facility in northwest Oklahoma City at 13200 N. Pennsylvania Avenue on the 180-acre Chisholm Creek development. Plans call for a 6,000 square foot vertical wind tunnel to be built at west Memorial Road and Pawnee Drive. This is a smaller building footprint than some of its larger wind tunnels in other cities, which can be as much as 40 to 50 feet tall. The company has 35 locations in the U.S. and abroad, the closest to Oklahoma is the facility in the Dallas suburb of Frisco, Texas. The company has flown more than 6 million people in a dozen countries since 1998.
What exactly is iFLY? iFLY is an indoor skydiving experience that creates true free fall conditions, just like skydiving, but without having to jump out of an airplane. iFLY’s 1400 hp vertical wind tunnel generates a wall-to-wall cushion of air on which you can safely float. There’s no parachute, no jumping, and nothing attaching you to planet Earth. It’s just you, the air, and an adrenaline rush. The fans are capable of top wind speeds of approximately 130 to 175+ mph, depending on the iFLY facility. The tunnel operator controls the wind speed based on the flyer’s weight and skill level. When children iFLY, they are not flown at anywhere near top wind speed.
The facility will be climate-controlled and will recirculate vertical wind tunnel air flow. Anyone from the ages of 3 to 103 can fly and the facility also serves as a training facility for experienced skydivers and military. It’s safe for kids, challenging for adults, exciting for teens, and realistic for skydivers. No experience necessary and skydiving gear and instruction are provided! This is an opportunity to get to learn and get the thrill of skydiving without having to jump out of an airplane. No parachutes are required, and anyone can fly in this safe and controlled environment. iFLY plans to opens its doors in Oklahoma in 2016!
