Celebrating Unity and Heritage: Recapping Black History Month Activities at the Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center
Vol.10 Issue 2

On Thursday, February 8th, members of the National Black Coalition of Federal Aviation Employees (NBCFAE) made a heartwarming visit to the Launching Pad Childcare Center. Their mission was to inspire young minds through the captivating stories of Alma Thomas. Ms. Thomas had a 35-year teaching career in art during the 1920’s. Her abstract style gained notoriety when she officially retired from teaching. Thomas became an important role model for women, African Americans, and older artists. She was the first African American woman to have a solo exhibition at New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art.

Volunteers from the NBCFAE coalition engaged with the Launching Pad children by reading books that showcased the remarkable journey of this influential African American artist. Following the storytelling, the kids eagerly participated in two crafts designed to commemorate Alma Thomas’s legacy.

Tesha McMinn, Deputy Executive Director of Labor and employee Field Operations and NCBFAE member, reads a story about Alma Thomas to the four-year-olds of the Launching Pad.
Another NBCFAE member, Shawn Oglesby, reads a story about Alma Thomas’s impact on many people.

The collaborative spirit continued the following week when the NBCFAE hosted a special luncheon. The young talents from the Launching Pad took center stage, serenading the Coalition with a soulful song that echoed the vibrancy of Black History Month. To add to the heartfelt moment, the children proudly presented their artwork, reflecting the creative inspiration drawn from Alma Thomas’s story.

Currently, Blue Sky Café is displaying the Black History Month art created by the children of the Launching Pad.

Culminating the series of events was the much-anticipated "Soul Food" Luncheon on Wednesday, February 14th. The Aeronautical Center’s food services team curated a Chef’s special menu, offering a choice of grilled chicken, fried chicken, or fried catfish as the main entrée. The luncheon was a true feast for the senses, complemented by delectable sides such as mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, or candied yams. The grand finale came in the form of a peach cobbler, a sweet and satisfying conclusion to the celebration.

The collaboration between Aeronautical Center employees and the NBCFAE brought cultural richness to the workplace and fostered a sense of unity and understanding. The impact of these activities resonated beyond the confines of the workplace, leaving an indelible mark on the participants and reinforcing the importance of acknowledging and celebrating diversity.

As we consider Black History Month and all the festivities, let us carry forward the spirit of collaboration, appreciation, and unity that defines these events. By recognizing and honoring our collective history, we continue to build a workplace that thrives on diversity and inclusivity.
